If we are even able to have a thought when we are anxious and flooded with destabilizing sensations, it is that we are out of control and it would take something huge to help us. This is myth. What we really need is to focus on things that are simple, slow, easy, grounding, gentle—the simplicity of breath, for instance. The imagination, usually running amok with dire scenarios, can so helpfully be harnessed for soothing purposes. But it may take the whole show: visualizations, activities and body awareness, to get us through an anxious period and to a place where we feel grounded and stable—even if just for a while. ‘A while’ is much better than never. You are an unwilling participant in your anxiety, but you can actively participate in its soothing. |
